Geoffrey Canada - appears on 60 Minutes talking about The Harlem Children’s Zone

It was good to see this being brought to light. I had no idea that the late Ed Bradley had one of the initial interviews with HCZ about 3 years ago! I hope the good people of Richmond saw this show!!!

  1. Good segment. It would have been nice if the Sixty Minutes segment had mentioned the importance of early intervention as reason for the Baby College. It's sort of implied, but would have be nice to help make the case for it.

  2. Thanks for this, Rodney---I would have missed it otherwise. I'm guessing we'll continue to get 60 Minutes updates on the progress of the Zone.

I have to say, though, that sharp Harvard brother kinda missed the point with wanting to distill Canada's approach to "pill" form. The point of the HCZ, it seems to me, is that a comprehensive, holistic approach IS what's needed everywhere, and if the money is spent and well-administered, the results will occur.

In other words, if you want a spectacular French meal, and you think you can duplicate the success of that meal by somehow figuring out which ingredients you need to make the next best thing, you ain't gonna have a "spectacular French meal"! Use the recipe---all of it---and you'll get the result. If the Promise Zones across the country aren't going to actually use Canada's approach, then they ought not to be "promising" anything....

  3. Bert,

You hit the nail on the head.. it must be a wholistic approach because it gives the children a lifetime to exist in an environment that maybe different from their experience outside of the zone. To me, this will force the child to think critically and question their value system.
